A senseless act of violence

Alan Senitt, intern for Mark Warner, was killed on Saturday night in Washington, DC. Alan, at 27 yrs. old, was already a leader in the British Jewish Community.

You can read more about it here and here.

Sometimes it sucks to live in the nation's Capitol. This is one of those times.

Moms day

Is anybody NOT reading about Scobles mom? Microsoft's most famous blogger has struck another chord by getting personal.

My mom suffered a TIA or transient ischemic stroke a year ago. It's been a long road back but we were very lucky. We, of course, found support groups through the blogesphere and associations like American Heart. More thoughts to Robert.

It's all in what you want to beleive

newspaper.jpg

Darren Rowse, of ProBlogger, had a great post on a newspaper snippet generator website.

I went ahead and created the above article of my own. I then sent a text-message to my wife, telling her to check her e-mail. She immediately called in disbelief. Not that having our son named 'student of the year' is unbelievable, it's actually not. But that I hadn't shared the good news until now... Joy turned to anger and I'm now in the doghouse. Funny thing is that I also sent this to other members of my family. They too sent in congrats!

I guess it's all in what you want to believe? I can already think of interesting viral marketing implications for this tool but that might also get you in trouble.

Hosting on a Monday morning

Well, I just started off Monday morning with a bang. We got telemarketed from a hosting service... Seems that when you register a domain name, this information becomes public domain. Oy.

9-Year-Old's Parents Had Turned to EBay to Raise Money for Surgery

"We met Frank, eyeball to eyeball," said Hrayr Shahinian, the surgeon who last month offered to waive his $40,000 fee for the biopsy after learning that the family was auctioning a "Frank must die" bumper sticker on eBay to raise money for the procedure. "We did some damage to [Frank], for sure."

Read this piece when you think you have problems feel like complaining. Then, help me find David's auction on ebay.

Family of Boy With Cancer Bids on Hope (free registration req. or try bugmenot.com)

Tiffini Dingman-Grover said it began with a grilled cheese sandwich -- not just any sandwich, but one that bore a likeness of the Virgin Mary and brought in $28,000 at auction online. The final, galling straw, she said, was a "haunted" walking cane that last month fetched $65,000 on eBay.

"I thought if people are going to spend that kind of money for crap, then maybe they'd put it toward a good cause," said Dingman-Grover, who has spent two years facing the emotional and financial cataclysm of a critically ill son, David, 9.

OLD UPDATES:  here is David's website.  I still can't find the auction on ebay though...

Craigslist and cottage industries

It's not an apples to apples comparison but while people have been debating HTML vs text for years, craigslist has built a business out of the lowest common denominator-- really plain text with no graphics. (originally seen on Susan Mernit's blog)

Bright Beginnings

As part of the Holiday, Jan/Elan/and I visited with Washington DC's Bright Beginnings Program today.  Executive Director  Betty Jo Gaines explained  that the  center could use more resources (time & money).  What a worthwhile place. The center offers a safe haven to 84 preschoolers that all come from really bad situations.

Here's the link for more info. and to help.

Bright beginnings is a developmental child care center for homeless preschoolers whose families are in crisis shelters or transitional housing in Washington, DC.

The center offers free, full-day, year-round, and developmentally- appropriate care for approximately 100 children aged six weeks to five years old. As one of two child care centers in the District of Columbia that offers free care to homeless children, Bright Beginnings is alleviating a desperate community shortage.

Anyone following Washington DC baseball knows that the current tiff is over proposed public and private financing of a new stadium. Tonight, there is a town hall meeting to discuss the impending future of Major League Baseball in DC.

Passions are running high with grassroots websites and discussions like this, this and this popping up. Off in frigid temps. to the town hall meeting to help save baseball--

FREE metro rides

I was heading downtown for a morning meeting this week and took the Washington, DC metro.  The turn styles were open and there was a bit of confusion. Seems that ING Direct picked up the tab for the morning commute (the 5:30a-9:30a shift).

As you departed the station, there were people greeters with ING direct marketing pieces waiting for you.  I also saw promotions in Baltimore, Md. but not sure about the free train rides there...

Maybe this is Metro's attempt to make the Washington, DC system more 'rider friendly'? I wonder what the metrics for success are with a promotion like this? In any event, a nice touch.
